The Juncos play Friday night at Scopazzi.
If the multiplicity of venues and festivals from the Boardwalk to Boulder Creek are anything to go by, Santa Cruz loves it some music. So when a beloved festival like the Brookdale Bluegrass Festival needed a helping hand (read: a new venue) after the Brookdale Lodge became… let’s call it indisposed, the Boulder Creek community rushed to its aid. This year, the revitalized Boulder Creek Bluegrass and Old Timey Festival is a smorgasbord of fiery finger-pickin’ spread out over three days and multiple locations.
July 13 Friday night, head on down to the main stage at Scopazzi’s Restaurant, where Elicia Burton and the Fun Guys start at 6pm, followed by Sons of Jefferson, String Slingers, The Juncos and Carolina Special.
July 14 Saturday, grab the kids and a picnic blanket for a day at the Boulder Creek Park. Between 11am and 2pm, Regina Bartlett, DamDave & the Hot Damn Band, Sidetrack and Jean Butterfield will take the stage while skilled artists and crafters showcase their wares along the streets of Boulder Creek.
The madness continues at Scopazzi’s after the fair and into the evening, with Sioux City Kid, BanjerDan, Laura Lind, Common Cents, Cactus Bob and Prairie Flower, Harmony Gritz and Jim Lewin and Friends.
July 15 By Sunday you’ll want to throw back a Bloody Mary, dust off the old acoustic and stop by the open mic at the PASS Studio in the old Boulder Creek Post Office. Afterwards, round out the weekend with a jam sesh at the Boulder Creek Brewery with Heathen Hill from 6-9pm.
Tickets are $15/day Friday and Saturday, available at www.brookdalebluegrass.com. Sunday events are free.
