Description
Have you ever wondered what goes into a classical music performance? How do they do that? If there is more than one musician, how do they manage to play together?
This is your chance to find out! The dynamic duo-piano team of Greg Anderson and Elizabeth Joy Roe are coming to Santa Cruz to teach exactly that in an ensemble master class Tuesday, January 24 at 7 p.m. in the UCSC Music Center Recital Hall. Come hear music by much-loved composers played by pianist/teachers & UCSC music students - and then improved!
Anderson & Roe, a duo-piano pair whose electric performances (live and on youtube) have garnered them millions of fans, will share some of the skills that bring them such success – in a hall which has some of the finest acoustics on the Central Coast, and features two superb matched grand pianos. This is a musical experience not to be missed.
The class will open with Schubert’s Fantasie in F minor for piano duet, played by Josephine Alvarado & Vlada Volkova-Moran. This piece was written in the last year of Schubert’s life, and is considered the “crowning glory” of his output. Diana Chau & Lucia Del Guerzo will play Romance from Arensky’s 1st Suite for two pianos, a simple poignant melody, gracefully embellished, reflecting the elegance of the Tsarist Russian culture in which Arensky lived. They will also play Danse Macabre for two pianos by Saint-Saens, one of his most popular pieces.
Nicki Kerns & Lynn Kidder will play the Valse and Romance from Rachmaninoff’s 2nd Suite for two pianos, sparkling and hauntingly beautiful music from Russia. After an intermission you will hear part of Brahms’ Sonata for two pianos, later scored for piano quintet, played by Ivan Rosenblum & Lynn Kidder. The class will conclude with George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess Fantasy, arranged for two pianos by Percy Grainger, played by Nicki Kerns & Lavinia Livingston.
A concert featuring music from the class, and more, will be presented at the UCSC Music Center Recital Hall on Sunday, February 12, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Come to both events to hear the difference in the performances before and after this public lesson. How often do you get to do that?!
Celebrate Piano Ensemble, part of the Santa Cruz County branch of Music Teachers Assn of CA, is presenting both events. Musician or not, this is an opportunity to see and hear behind the scenes of classical performances – while supporting young musicians in the community. $10 admission donations go to local music scholarships for children grades 2-12 and to education enrichment.
