The vibrant music scene in our town can be a blessing and a curse. Even on a “slow week”, when most of the bigger bands are off gallivanting around Coachella, we’ve still got a full plate on our table. When are we supposed to sleep?

Death Grips at The Catalyst

Whether they’re flipping off all of downtown LA from a balcony, putting uncensored genitalia on their album cover, or breaking into office buildings to film videos, Death Grips have been up to something headline-grabbing since visionary drummer and producer Zach Hill started the project with the ever interesting MC Ride back in 2010. Their insanely unique and high energy live show sounds and feels somewhere between hip hop, a punk rock mosh pit, and a monster truck rally. Come get yelled at (in a great way).

Show at 8:30pm. Tickets are sold out, but there is a day-of lottery for a significant number of tickets. Enter here.

Chuck Prophet and The Mission Express at The Crepe Place

How can you not love a group that lists “white trash soul” as their main genre? While this show could rest on its musical laurels, Chuck could have had a second career as a stand-up comedian. The group has a stage presence as unique as their sound, which somehow combines surf rock, soul music and grunge into something entirely new and intriguing. Come check out these Bay Area classics, and grab a crepe while you’re at it.

Show at 9pm. Tickets $15

Monophonic at Moe’s Alley

Playing their own brand of music coined as “psychedelic soul”, Monophonic is bringing one of the best dance parties in the Bay Area back to Moe’s Alley this Friday night. Born and raised in San Francisco, these musicians were raised around just about everything you could listen to, and it shows. The band draws influences from everyone from The Beach Boys and The Beatles to early funkadelic and Sly & The Family Stone, adding their own style at every twist and turn. Bring your dancing shoes.

Show at 9pm. Tickets $15 adv/$20 at the door

Unwritten Law at The Catalyst

There’s an old San Diegan legend that mentions Crazy Poway Kids, AKA CPK, in reference to a small suburb located inland of Del Mar that was home to a lawless band of skaters, BMX bikes and the best house shows south of LA. While you have may have heard of Blink 182 or Box Car Racer, this area also spawned one of the most exciting acts of the 2000’s: Unwritten Law. Unlike the aforementioned groups, Unwritten Law is still going strong with six studio albums, acoustic recordings, and a recent live album, “Live and Lawless”. These guys put on a high energy rock show that you just don’t see that much anymore.

Show at 8:30pm. Tickets $18.
