The new Makers Factory—installed in its Cruzio building offices for two weeks now—invites the Santa Cruz community to drop by their downtown space for their first public event: making personalized lasercut holiday popup cards and decorations.

“Popup cards are a traditional form of greeting card,” says Makers Factory co-founder Chris Yonge. “The problem is that they require some planning and they require some skill and handiwork.”

Well, sir, that may have been the case yesterday! But now, for $12 a card, customers can learn about using the lasercutter and make professional-looking popup cards themselves.

Yonge explains that they’ll be able to choose from three or four popup card designs already in the software, choose a color for the card, choose a personalized greeting and then watch as the card gets cut out by the laser.

The Makers Factory ultimately hopes not only to provide classes and a space with machines for individuals to work on personal projects, but to also become “the basis for a creative and technical community in Santa Cruz,” says Yonge. He envisions that this community will be made up of a wide range of individuals, including “people from UCSC, people from Cabrillo College, high school teachers, families, kids, artists, technologists and people who want to add to their creative skills, like architects and engineers.” And, he adds,” particularly, of course, the next generation.”

The Makers Factory will hold drop-in hours to lasercut personalized holiday popup cards on Friday Dec. 2, 3-5:30pm, Saturday Dec. 3, 1-4pm and Saturday Dec. 10, 1-4pm ($12 a card).

They will also hold two-hour events “Show & Tell & Make for the holidays” to teach about 3D printing and laser cutting on Saturday Dec. 10, 10am-12pm and Saturday Dec. 17, 10am-12pm and 1pm-3pm ($49 for two people or $99 for four people).
