About Bill Charlap Trio

Bill Charlap is a grandmaster at the art of the piano trio. From Great American Songbook classics to obscure bebop tunes, his sense of phrasing and harmonic intuition keeps the music percolating at all times. Twenty years ago, the formation of his trio with bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington drew immediate raves from jazz fans and music critic. The two Washingtons are not related, yet perform as if they were born to play together. Signed to the iconic Blue Note Records label in 2000, Charlap released a string of heralded recordings, two of them receiving Grammy nominations. On Blue Note Record's 70th Anniversary, he served as musical director for the Blue Note Seven, an all-star septet representing the label's artist roster. Through the years, Charlap's professional career has spanned the gamut from accompanist to bandleader. He has performed with many prominent jazz artists including Phil Woods, Gerry Mulligan and Wynton Marsalis. But with his longtime trio-mates, Peter and Kenny, the musical interplay verges on the telepathic. Their most recent recording is Notes From New York (Impulse Records). You will not hear a finer, straight-ahead classic jazz trio than this.
