About Chucho Valdés: Solo Piano

Chucho Valdés is a living icon of Cuban music. A pianist, composer, six-time Grammy and three-time Latin Grammy award-winner, he is the son of piano legend Bebo Valdés and co-founded of Irakere, Cuba's first “supergroup,” in the early '70s. By itself, his contribution to the legacy of Irakere represents a brilliant milestone of innovative achievement. And yet, as an artist, he continues to scale new artistic heights. In 2005, he left Irakere to focus on his solo projects and collaborate with other major artists, such as trumpeter Roy Hargrove. In 2010, he formed a new sextet, the Afro-Cuban Messengers— a reference to Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers —and continued to play solo piano on concert tours at sold out venues. Chucho's sound is a rich mélange of Afro-Cuban dance rhythms and jazz improvisation embued with earthy soulfulness, making occasional, brief excursions into the classical world. His blending of folkloric forms with modern harmony ingeniously forms a link between Cuba's past and present. Valdés' recent recording Tribute to Irakere: Live in Marciac won a 2016 Grammy award for Best Latin Jazz Album.
