About Outdoor contra dance at Abbott Square

Come enjoy an outdoor contra dance next to Abbott Square Market and the Museum of Art and History! This is a beginner-friendly dance, free and open to new dancers.

Dance to the music of Paul Rangell (fiddle, mandolin), Chris Jong (fiddle, banjo), and Emily Abbink (guitar). Caller is Andy Shore.

Everyone is welcome! Bringing a partner is not required, and prior dancing experience is not necessary. Contra dance is a traditional New England style of folk dancing, in which each dance is taught and prompted by a caller. During each dance, partners “progress” up or down the hall, eventually dancing with everyone else in the line. Dances are high-energy, playful, social and set to live music. New dancers are encouraged to attend the free lesson at 5:40, before the regular dance at 6:00.

Wear comfortable, non-marking shoes, and comfortable clothing with layers (twirly skirts over stockings are great fun!). This outdoor dance will feature a marley floor.

This is a free dance, but cash donations are always appreciated. Suggested amounts are $12 regular, $20 for supporters, $8 for full-time students.
