"... one of Cuba's grandest, longest-established bands...." -New York Times
Since 1939, Orquesta Aragon (founded by Orestes Aragón Cantero) has been considered Cuba's finest charanga band. Featuring a frontline of violins, flute, and one or more vocalists matched to a rhythm section of piano, bass, guiro, and timbales, charanga bands first became popular in Cuba over a century ago. Originally specializing in the Cuban danzón, Orquesta Aragón evolved to encompass the dance styles of Cha-cha-cha, Onda-cha, Pachanga, and variations of the Són. As JazzTimes magazine points out, Orquesta Aragón is, "Not just a revival band, but modernists expanding the repertoire of charanga music."
