Description

- Experience the best of Filipino art, dance, music and food at the 19th Annual Pistahan Parade and Festival on Aug. 11-12, 2012 at the Yerba Buena Gardens located at Mission and 4th Streets. The event is the largest celebration of Filipino Americans in the U.S. and features the return of the popular Adobo Cook-off, Balut-Eating Contest, delectable Filipino cuisine and desserts, cultural exhibits, and world-class live performances on two stages. The two-day event is expected to draw over 70,000 people. It is FREE admission and fun for the entire family!

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge, this year's theme is "Bridging Cultures and Communities" and the Pistahan Parade and Festival will celebrate cultural connections and influences of Filipino heritage to other communities.

The Pistahan Parade will kick-off the weekend festivities and will take place Saturday, August 11.
Beautifully themed floats and an estimated 100 colorful and entertaining contingents representing many different ethnic communties around the Bay Area make this a unique San Francisco event. The parade will begin at Beale St., march down Market Street, make a left on 4th Street, and end on Folsom St.

Both festival days will feature an array of entertainment, exhibits, and immersive cultural opportunities. There will be seven fun, educational, and interactive pavilions:

Art Pavilion:
Visual art exhibits showcase an eclectic genre and styles of Filipino artists from local areas and abroad through the cooperation of gallery owners, schools and art groups. Meet the artists and discover the rich artistic heritage of the Philippines.

Dance Pavilion:
Festival attendees can catch the rhythm and participate in folk dance demonstrations and workshops. This interactive pavilion will teach traditional folk dances for a memorable cultural experience.

Ramar Foods Culinary Pavilion:
Celebrating the many flavors of Philippine cuisine, local restaurants will feature their specialty regional cuisine at the Food Court. Professional and amateur chefs are invited to participate in the 8th annual Adobo Cookoff either in the traditional or "fusion adobo" categories. Don't miss the annual popular Balut Eating Contest and Ice Cream Eating Contest! Stick around to watch cooking demonstrations on Filipino dishes influenced by other cultures and vice-versa.

Wells Fargo Heritage Pavilion:
A mini Filipino museum displaying Philippine antiques, artifacts, photographs and material art from institutions and local collectors, most pieces never displayed in public before. Connect with Filipino history and learn something new about our rich and vibrant past! Featuring an exhibit on the building and the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge, and a look at the Filipino community life during the 1930s in the shadow of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Creativity Pavilion:
Featuring "17 Characters," an art exhibit showcasing the 17 characters Baybayin, the ancient Filipino script as interpreted by 17 different artists of various ethnic backgrounds. Festival attendees will have an opportunity to learn about Baybayin and create their own artwork interpretation of the Baybayin characters.

Kaiser Permanente Health Pavilion:
Partner organizations will provide useful information, provide awareness, and address the health care issues of our community. Free hepatitis B screenings will also be available.

Play Pavilion:
Learn traditional Filipino street games like patintero, tumbang preso, sipa and more. Witness a boxing tournament and catch Filipino martial arts demonstrations, honoring Filipino warriors past and present.
