The Live Earth Farm Discovery Program (LEFDP) provides hands-on educational programs focused on local, organic, and sustainable food systems. The program’s intent is to reach out to all segments of the community with an emphasis on low-income, diverse and underserved population.
The LEFDP “classroom,” Live Earth Farm, is a well established community-based, small, organic farm which exemplifies farm to fork environmental stewardship. LEFDP offers year round farm-based educational programs on topics including but not limited to:
· Organic and nature based sustainable farming;
· Local food networks;
· Humane livestock management;
· Environmental Education;
· Permaculture design.
It’s 11am and I’m chopping my way through the largest pile of organic dry farmed tomatoes I’ve ever seen outside of a farmers market with nine other burgeoning homesteaders at Live Earth Farm outside of Watsonville. Jordan Champagne, our ringleader and canning queen at the Happy Girl Kitchen Co., is teaching us how to can tomatoes with the confidence, patience and optimism of a sage.
