18th Annual Homeless Memorial
About 18th Annual Homeless Memorial
The Homeless Services Center, the Homeless Persons’ Health Project and the River Street Shelter are holding the 18th annual Memorial to honor those people who have passed away in the Homeless Community in Santa Cruz County this past year.
We will gather in the dining room at the Homeless Services Center to join the national remembrance of those that have departed and reflect on the need to work towards ending chronic homelessness. Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day is an annual country-wide event that is celebrated in over 150 cities on the first day of winter.
Speakers will include homeless advocate Pastor Paul Spurlock, Claudia Brown, Chair of the Board of HSC, as well as other community members and friends and family of those that passed away.
Building on the theme of “remember, hope, and heal,” the event will feature a ceremonial reading of the names of more than 50 persons, homeless and formerly homeless, who died in the past year. The event is open to the public. Advocates, service providers, homeless and formerly homeless people, religious leaders, and concerned citizens will honor the lives and dreams of homeless men and women who died this year in Santa Cruz and will renew their commitment to end homelessness.
As we write their names on our list we try to reflect on their lives and on the lives of those that are experiencing homelessness in an ongoing effort to reach out a caring hand and take action in supporting them.
