Art Retreat with Andy Weber: The Scared Art of Tibet

This weekend course will focus on the most amazing image in the Tibetan Buddhist iconography.

First described in the Extensive Enjoyment Sutra by Buddha Shakyamuni, this diagram depicts the nature and causes of cyclic existence. Yama, the lord of death holds the wheel in his teeth and claws reminding the viewer of impermanence and that there is not a single being in cyclic existence who is outside the control of death. To break the chain of endless cyclic of death and rebirth we need to eliminate the fundamental delusions of ignorance, hatred and greed, depicted by the three animals – pig, snake and pigeon – in the hub of the wheel.

Students will receive hands-on-instruction to draw and paint the Wheel of Life. Advanced students will draw the image directly on canvas or paper. Beginners will focus on constructing the image with the help of grids

Painting instructions and information about paints used in this sacred art tradition will be taught. Meditation and mantra recitation will enhance the experience and deepen the understanding of the course subject.

About the Instructor:

The artist Andy Weber spent seven years living and studying the iconographical art of Tibetan Buddhism under the guidance of accomplished masters in India and Nepal.

Materials to bring to retreat:

Drawing paper or canvas, pencil HB (mechanical pencil), an eraser, long ruler. Painting materials (as needed)

Art retreat participants must attend the Friday-evening talk.
