Michael Cooper attended Hebrew University and Tel Aviv University Medical School in the late 1960's. After graduating in 1975 (with a dissertation on the effect of meditation on coronary artery risk factors), he returned to Northern California to specialize in pediatric cardiology. Now at UCSF Medical Center, he has been volunteering for medical missions to Israel twice a year for the past twelve years, serving Palestinian children who lack access to care.

Following the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin in the mid 1990's, Dr. Cooper began writing historical fiction, in an effort to convey a message of coexistence and a hope for reconciliation and peace under cover of fiction.

His first novel, Foxes in the Vineyard, set in 1948 Jerusalem, was published in 2011 and won the Indie Publishing Award grand prize. Th! e Rabbi's Knight, set in the Holy Land at the twilight of the Crusades in 1290, was published in 2015 and was a finalist for the 2014 Chaucer Award for Historical Fiction. A third novel, Sins of the Fathers, set in the Ottoman theater of WWI, is to be published next year.

Dr. Cooper donates all author proceeds to his sister Adrienne's legacy fund, and includes a free copy of her first solo CD with every book purchased. The CD, Dreaming in Yiddish, was originally produced in 1997 by Adrienne Cooper, a leading figure in the world-wide Yiddish revival, who died six years ago. For a sense of Adrienne's impact on the worldwide Yiddish revival and the quality of the CD, here are a couple of links:
