About Homeless Garden Project: Free Food and Wellness Fair @ Natural Bridges Farm, May 21st 10a-3p

Santa Cruz, CA, April 22, 2016– The Homeless Garden Project will hold a free food and wellness fair on Saturday, May 21 from 11 AM to 2 PM at their 3.5 acre organic farm on the Westside of Santa Cruz. The fair features cooking demonstrations by a variety of cooks ranging from a professional chef and instructor at the International Culinary Center to youth in the Teen Kitchen Project and the Food What?! Program. There will be opportunities to learn about home gardening, practice yoga, and participate in mobile health screenings.

The goal of our Food and Wellness Fair is to increase the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables and connect directly with the source of nourishment—the farm.
Our goal is to host a very diverse audience of community members interested in increasing their health and the health of our soils, air and water. No matter whether you’re more familiar with cooking or farming, we see this health fair as building skill and competence from farm to table for all involved.—Darrie Ganzhorn, Executive Director

The fair is free and includes a light lunch. The Project will offer a free cookbook, “Good and Cheap: Eat Well on $4 a Day” to participants who complete a survey. The cookbook was written by a nutrition graduate student who realized that many people who receive food stamps need to meet their food needs on $4/day. The full color cookbook was named one of Civil Eats’ 20 Best Food and Farm Books of 2015.

The Homeless Garden Project provides job training, transitional employment and support services to people who are homeless. The Project also operates a volunteer and community education program that in 2015 served nearly 2500 people of all ages and from all walks of life. The Project’s award-winning programs all take place in the 3.5 acre organic farm on the Westside of Santa Cruz and in related enterprises.
