Ken Norris Memorial Lecture: Salt Water Intrusion Along Monterey Bay—Is Our Groundwater Too Salty?
About Ken Norris Memorial Lecture: Salt Water Intrusion Along Monterey Bay—Is Our Groundwater Too Salty?
The Seymour Center will host a lively and informative panel discussion about the pressing and imminent problem of saltwater intrusion along the Monterey Bay coastline.
For years, groundwater levels in our region have been dropping to record-level lows at such a rate that our aquifers are no longer being naturally replenished by rainfall. As groundwater levels fall, salty ocean water infiltrates inland. The aquifers become contaminated with seawater causing wells to become too salty and unusable. Saltwater intrusion is potentially irreversible and can result in costly changes for the end users. What does this mean for the future? Join us as we reveal the complexities of saltwater intrusion and explore viable solutions with our expert panel.
The Panel:
Ron Duncan, General Manager, Soquel Creek Water District
Andy Fisher, Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences, UC Santa Cruz
Meredith Goebel, Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Stanford University
Moderated by Cynthia Chase, Former Santa Cruz Mayor and City Councilmember
Sponsored by Naomi Kirschenbaum

Join us each fall for this outstanding tradition––thoughtful topics and renowned thinkers in an intimate setting. This annual lecture is named in honor of Ken Norris and his big-picture thinking. Ken was a scientist, naturalist, conservationist, teacher, and a long-time UC Santa Cruz professor of natural history. He was known for his pioneering work with dolphins, helping to author landmark federal legislation protecting marine mammals in the 1970s, establishing the University of California Natural Reserve System, and for being part of the team that founded the Long Marine Lab.
