Labside Chats: A Conversation with a Scientist, featuring Katie Kobayashi
About Labside Chats: A Conversation with a Scientist, featuring Katie Kobayashi
Tune in for the Seymour Center's next Labside Chat with Katie Kobayashi, Ph.D. candidate in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology department at UC Santa Cruz and graduate student researcher with the Fisheries Collaborative Program, on Thursday, April 8, 2021 at 11:00 AM PDT. Discover the differences between a steelhead and a rainbow trout, and what it means for the ecology and conservation of California’s coastal watersheds.
Join the conversation! Submit your questions in advance for Katie, then watch the conversation to hear the answers during the live chat. Help us put together questions such as:
• What is the difference between steelhead and rainbow trout?
• How does a “keystone gene” shape migration, feeding behavior, physiology, and ecological interactions?
• How did the CZU fire impact our local watersheds?
• Why is scientific communication so important, and how can it inspire others to become stewards of the natural world?

This Labside Chat is sponsored by the UCSC Fisheries Collaborative Program in partnership with the NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center.
The Fisheries Collaborative Program (FCP) at UC Santa Cruz is dedicated to advancing the science of fisheries ecology, fisheries resource management, and environmental research as related to marine and freshwater species and their habitats. As the largest organized research unit within the Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS), FCP is home to more than 140 researchers. FCP fosters collaborations between scientists at the NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center, and faculty, researchers, and graduate students at UC Santa Cruz. Through fieldwork, laboratory experiments, and computational modeling, FCP conducts comprehensive studies with global impact on the conservation of threatened and endangered species, domestic and international fisheries management, and the understanding of climate change effects on marine and freshwater ecosystems. FCP is co-located with the NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center on the UCSC Coastal Science Campus, with satellite research groups located in Monterey and La Jolla, CA.

Labside Chats are for everyone interested in science. Join the Seymour Center on the second and fourth Thursday of every month (except holidays) for a LIVE Q&A discussion with a marine scientist, who provides insight into the wonderful, curious, and sometimes bizarre world of scientific discovery!
• Time: 11:00 AM PST/PDT (unless otherwise noted)
• Location: Online; livestreamed on the Seymour Center’s website and YouTube channel
• Recommended for ages 10 and older
Labside Chats are offered at no charge. You can support the Seymour Center by becoming a member or making a donation today:
