Oaxacan Banda Music Concert

FREE Banda de Musica concert by 25 visiting student musicians from Centro de Integración Social (CIS No.8), San Bartolome, Zoogocho. Oaxaca. CIS is a public boarding school renowned for its Banda de Viento music program. These students ages 10 to 21 are from farming villages and are accomplished musicians. This performance is sponsored by UCSC Department of Anthropology, Chicano Latino Resource Center, and Merrill College.
The CIS students and their teachers are in Santa Cruz on a two-week cultural exchange sponsored by the Santa Cruz nonprofit Senderos which provides free music and dance classes, tutoring and scholarships for Latino youth. CIS musicians will be performing downtown at Abbott Square, 118 Cooper Street for a free community fiesta on Saturday, May 7 from 5:00-7:30 pm and at the Vive Oaxaca Guelaguetza cultural festival on Sunday, May15 at Harbor High School, 300 La Fonda Avenue from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Oaxacan food and beverage specialties will be available at the festivals.
