About Open Streets Watsonville 2019

Save the date for Open Streets Watsonville 2019! A day of play in the streets on downtown Watsonville—bike, dance, picnic, stroll in the street. Learn about local non-profit groups, listen to live music, and experience the joy of open, safe, spacious public space.

Open Streets returns to downtown Watsonville returns Sunday, June 2nd, 2019 on Brennan/Union Street between Callaghan Park and the City Plaza from 11 am to 4 pm. For the fourth year, this popular car-free community event will create a “pop-up park” where people can walk, bike, skate, dance, and play in the street with this stretch of road temporarily closed to cars. Open Streets Watsonville is completely free and open to all. Join us for exercise, family-friendly activities, art, live music, educational resources, or to just play in the street!

Open Streets Watsonville 2019 will feature dozens of local organizations, agencies and businesses hosting outreach booths where participants can receive educational resources, participate in interactive games and activities, receive prizes and giveaways, and more! Last year's participating organizations included CASA of Santa Cruz, FoodWhat?!, Yoga For All Movement, Current eBikes, Project Bike Tech, Santa Cruz Fiber, Sierra Club, PAPÁS, Cabrillo College, Jacob's Heart, Friends of the Rail & Trail, Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History, Annieglass, Community Traffic Safety Coalition, Encompass Head Start, Santa Cruz CORE Fitness + Rehab, Kruz Kids Summer Day Camp, Santa Cruz METRO, Santa Cruz Permaculture, Bike Santa Cruz County, Pediatric Medical Group of Watsonville, Jovenes SANOS, Santa Cruz County Nutrition Program, Peace of Mind Dog Rescue, Salud Para La Gente, and more!

Based on the Ciclovía movement, founded by Gil Penalosa in the 1970s in Bogotá, Colombia, Open Streets closes public roadways to automobiles and opens them to people. It's all about celebrating public space, recreation, healthy lifestyle choices, and joining together in in community. Open Streets Santa Cruz County was founded by Saskia Lucas in 2012.
