WORKSHOP : Our Lives outside Home and Work
`
Where do you turn to renew yourself from your places of home and work? What do you seek in this “third place”—variety, relaxation, inspiration, joy, excitement? Is your Third Place about reaching outward or retreating inward, about deepening personal relationships or nourishing community ties?
Together we consider some examples from past eras and investigate what we can learn from them: the agora in ancient Greece, the theater in Shakespeare’s London, the beer garden in Germany and Cincinnati, and the coffee house in Paris and New York.
With this as background, we explore how the notion of a Third Place features in our own lives, how it manifests in Santa Cruz today:
- Which essential elements are embodied in our choices of Third Place?
- What qualities of heart, mind and spirit do we wish to bring into Third Place?
- How does the freedom of choice that Third Place offers invite in greater openness and curiosity, as well as playful dialogue and community fellowship?
With the revolutions in mobile computing and the Internet, much has changed in how we define and experience the notions of “home” and “work.” Given this, are cafés and bookshops still the “hangouts at the heart of a community?” (Ray Oldenburg, The Great Good Place, 1989) Or are the new “virtual” hangouts of social media platforms and communication apps increasingly replacing the “real” ones?
However we define it—might there be the potential to cultivate actively a Third Place “attitude” in all the encounters in our lives?
*
During our afternoon, we will move, write, observe, draw, share and discuss, as we embark upon a journey of experimentation and discovery.

Jeanne & David
Jeanne Rosen and David Lakein are a mother-son team who are forming a nonprofit organization that draws on techniques from a variety of artistic practices and community-building initiatives to effect significant social change. We offer a variety of workshops and events that seek to create distinct environments for dialogue and experimentation. Our core belief is that there exists a greater potential than we often realize for visionary action and transformative interaction, especially when we collaborate across disciplines, cultures and generations.
Jeanne Rosen is a community leader engaged in intercultural projects and interfaith groups; she lives in Santa Cruz, CA. David Lakein is an interdisciplinary artist and educator; he is based in Chicago and teaches-performs internationally. Their collaboration is an outgrowth of their individual interests, experiences and shared passions, as well as their inter-generational relationship.
