About The Dickens Project

The Dickens Project creates opportunities for collaborative research on the literary works and culture of Charles Dickens's Victorian Britain, and disseminates research findings through annual conferences, institutes, and publications.

The Dickens Project has four closely related, mutually reinforcing goals:
1. to promote and carry out collaborative interdisciplinary research on Charles Dickens and the culture and society of 19th-century Britain;
2. through regular conferences and publications and especially through its annual summer institute—the Dickens Universe—to bring the results of this research before an audience of scholars, teachers, undergraduates, and members of the general public;
3. to train graduate students who will become leaders of the next generation of 19th-century scholars;
4. to encourage and support the teaching of novels by Dickens and other nineteenth-century writers by producing curricular materials and organizing workshops, including regular NEH summer seminars for college and high school teachers.
