Aptos Artists & Surfboard Shapers Open Workshops

The entire Santa Cruz community is being invited to meet local artists and eco-friendly surfboard shapers here in Aptos. The workshop complex at 800 Estates Drive has become a renowned center of surfboard and unique art creation. The workshops at this two story facility will be open from 11a-5p on Saturday, May 20 and Sunday, May 21. Visitors can tour the wood shop of Ventana Surfboards & Supplies and the shaping bays of Ashley Lloyd Surfboards and Locus Surfboards. All three are creators of stunning and performant surfboards that are Ecoboard Verified by SustainableSurf.org. Ventana will have their complete, apparel and surf supply pop-up shop on site, and will be showcasing their hollow wooden surfboard and bodysurfing handplane creations. Top local artists will also be on hand to show off where they create their artwork along with the art itself. Artists include Jeremiah Kille, Suzanne McCourt, Michael Mote, João de Brito, Bonnie Minardi, Mike Beebe and Cheryl Moreno. Jean Scheckler Beebe will have her art on display and will also have an old wetsuit that children can paint on to contribute to a community-created, upcycled art pieces. Alibi Interiors and Santa Cruz Engraving will be opening their spaces and showing off their unique creations for the home and office, as well.

A similar event last year gave visitors a unique look into the diverse studios at the space. This year, the number of participants has expanded and the group aims to make this an annual event. New this year, as well, is a philanthropic component. All the artists and shapers will be donating 10% of sales to Save Our Shores to support their local ocean conservation work.
