From New Brighton you can, at least in theory, walk the beach all the way to Monterey. Photo by Lily Stoicheff.
New Brighton State Beach was once known as China Beach or China Cove, and was the site of a Chinese fishing village during the 1870s and 1880s. After regulations slowed commercial fishing, New Brighton became a state beach in 1933 and since then has become a popular camping destination.
Reservations are a must, but once you’re here you can enjoy hiking trails and gentle water perfect for swimming and fishing.
The town of Capitola-by-the-Sea, just a mile away, offers endless opportunities for entertainment as well, with a beach esplanade, restaurants and nightclubs.
