Celebrate the longest day of the year in a distinctly Santa Cruz way at Project Pollinate’s Summer Solstice Party in San Lorenzo Park on Saturday, June 20th, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The family-friendly event will surely entertain as it educates on current social, political and ecology issues, including the health of bees and other pollinators, social inequality and climate change. Nearly 30 nonprofit organizations dedicated to serving the community will host interactive booths to educate and inform the public.

Highlights include eight hours of live music by local bands and a free lunch provided by the Red Chef, The Seva Ashram and Project Pollinate. A Geodesic Dome will be constructed on site by local GeoDome constructionist, Erick Cruz, and used throughout the day as a colorful, covered rest area where people can relax after dancing or engage in thoughtful discussions on issues presented at the party.

In between music sets, Jim Greiner’s Hands-On! Community Drum Circle will lead the audience in community drumming.

Festivities will start with a special opening ceremony, including performances and blessings by the Seva Ashram, local Native American Representative, William Underbaggage, and a prayer and song by Djidé Koffa, a native of Cameroon, central Africa.

Guest speakers will speak on various topics throughout the day, including Tony Hill award-winner, Stefan Nelson who will talk about social inequality, and local bee expert, Hamutahl Cohen who will share his research on the effects of agricultural practices and urbanization on pollinator health. Many of the participating organizations will also lead mini-“teach ins” or “micro workshops” to discuss topics and issues that cover the spectrum of social and environmental justice issues.

For kids, there will be bubble blowing, coloring books, crafts and more. The Lawn Bowling Courts will be open for active folks of all ages to enjoy.

Project Pollinate is a Santa Cruz based nonprofit organization that works to bring people together through art, music and discussion and address issues that affect our community and the world.
