Coastal Cleanup Day Yields Loads of Trash

Stretching from the quiet creeks of Waddell Beach to the jagged coastline of Big Sur, 4,584 volunteers swarmed beaches and rivers around Monterey Bay to pick up garbage and recyclables last Saturday, Sept 17, as part of International Coastal Cleanup Day. Save Our Shores crews working at 81 cleanup locations in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties removed more than 17,000 pounds of trash, about 3,200 pounds of it recyclable. “It’s amazing how many people come out,” says Colleen Bednarz, communications director for Save Our Shores.

Santa Cruz’s Big Fat Greek Fundraiser

Greece was in the news this weekend, not only because bankers around the world were watching to see if the country defaults, but also because Californians from across the Bay Area gathered in the Santa Cruz agora for the 31st Annual Greek Festival. Here was a chance to get a taste of Greece, and as anyone who’s ever been to Greece or even seen My Big Fat Greek Wedding knows, there’s no such thing as a little taste of Greece.

Cop Dragged with Stolen Truck

The SCPD is searching for Ryan Mang, 37, and Shivhan Armstrong, 25, after they assaulted a police officer and dragged him along the road for over 30 feet with a stolen truck. The officer suffered moderate injuries. Both Mang and Armstrong are well known to the SCPD. Each has a long criminal record in the city.

Hunt Acquitted of Murder, Sentenced for Robbery

Adam Hunt, 31, who was charged for his involvement in the murder of Elias Sorokin, was sentenced to five years in prison. He was convicted of robbing Sorokin, but unlike his codefendant Kenneth Clamp, he was not convicted of felony murder. Nevertheless, Judge Paul Marigonda determined that Hunt poses a danger to society and sentenced him to the maximum five years. Based on time served, Hunt will be out of prison in two years and three months.
