Imagine a day touring local artists’ workshops, seeing a lot of art for the first time and getting to find out what inspires Santa Cruz’s thriving art culture. Now imagine six. Over the first three weekends in October, nearly 300 local artists will open their studio doors across Santa Cruz County—not unlike a multitude of Willie Wonkas—for the Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County’s 2009 Open Studios Art Tour. In this ultimate art adventure, visitors can chat with artists and gain insight into the creative process in this annual opportunity to experience Santa Cruz visual culture firsthand. The tour features a wide array of media, from photography and painting to sculpture and glass art. Studios north of the Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor participate Oct. 3-4 and South County artists Oct. 10-11, with a full county encore for most artists Oct. 17-18.
OPEN STUDIOS artist guides with maps of the event, which function as admission price, can be purchased for $20 at various locations around town, including the Open Studios Art Tour Preview Exhibit at the Santa Cruz Art League, 526 Broadway Ave., Santa Cruz. Exhibit up through Sunday, Oct. 10.
