President Brian King of Cabrillo College had some disheartening news for his students. “At a time when the dismal performance of the state and national economy has prompted record numbers of students to come to Cabrillo, the reductions in state funding have forced us to significantly reduce course offerings and other programs and services. The impact on our students—as well as the men and women who would have taught the courses that were eliminated or provided needed services that have been reduced or eliminated—has been devastating.”
The school’s board met last night to discuss strategies to deal with $3.2 million in state funding cuts, with disabled and disadvantaged students among the first to suffer. Programs at the new Stroke and Disability Center and the Extended Opportunity Programs and Services assisting students facing language, social, or economic challenges will be reduced considerably. According to state law, faculty and staff to be laid off because of the budget cuts must be notified by March 15.
