Forget about Cash for Clunkers. Cabrillo College in Aptos is launching a new Cash for Carpool program. As part of the school’s efforts to get students to find more sustainable ways to get to school each day, the college is promoting biking, walking, and, yes, carpooling. To promote carpooling, each participant in the new program will get up to $25 per gas, and twice a year they will have a draw for a $600 gas card. Other initiatives include interest-free loans to students who decide to buy a bicycle.

According to Ecology Action, which is cosponsoring the initiative, 50 percent of the school’s carbon footprint is the result of gas emissions. Two years ago, about 65 percent of students drove to school alone every day, but that number has since been reduced. Last year, about 450 students signed a pledge to find more sustainable ways to get to school, and the project’s organizers hope to increase that this year.
