District 27 incumbent Bill Monning and Watsonville mayor and District 28 candidate Luis Alejo will do well by the Central Coast in Sacramento.
State Assembly District 27: Bill Monning
Since his election to office two years ago, Bill Monning has weathered the worst Sacramento has to offer and come up swinging. His legislative accomplishments include passage of a sustainable seafood labeling initiative and assistance for creating a veterans cemetery at Fort Ord. He’s come out strongly against the toxic strawberry fumigant methyl iodide, marshaled votes against offshore oil drilling and as chair of the Assembly Health Committee is pressing for a state health care exchange structured to complement Obamacare. In short, he’s standing up for the environment, the disadvantaged and the basic right to health care. His Republican challenger, Linda “Ellie” Black, names fluoridation and the U.N. food safety standards known as the Codex Alimentarius as her chief issues (she opposes both). The Santa Cruz Weekly recommends Monning.
State Assembly District 28: Luis Alejo
Current District 28 Assemblymember Anna Caballero is running for state senate, and the candidates looking to replace her are Watsonville mayor Luis Alejo and businessman Robert Bernosky. A self-made startup expert, Bernosky offers a businesslike financial focus but relies on the old familiar formula of shrinking state government and revenues—a seemingly simplistic approach when education, infrastructure and basic human services are suffering. Alejo, by contrast, wants a state more involved in job creation, health care, green tech, gang intervention and education. We find Luis Alejo to be the better choice for the Assembly seat.
