Erik Rebert Johnston was driving along Highway 9 on April 1 with his girlfriend and her two daughters, aged 9 and 22 months. At one point something ticked him off, so authorities say he pulled over to the side of the road and flung the younger baby out of the car. She flew 20 feet before landing on the pavement and skidding into the road. The girl’s mother retrieved the infant, and they all drove home, but Johnston wasn’t finished. He beat up the mother and threatened to kill her if she reported the incident.

She didn’t have to. A witness to some of the abuse reported it to the Sheriff’s Office, and Johnston, who had a previous conviction for domestic abuse, was arrested. The Santa Cruz DA’s Office has now said that he will face felony child abuse and domestic violence charges. A trial date for Johnston is scheduled to be set later this month.
