In the 18 months since he was appointed President of the University of California system, Chancellor Mark Yudof has never once visited the UCSC campus. All that was about to change this past Monday, when Yudof was scheduled to meet with Chancellor George Blumenthal. Then came the protests and the occupation of Kerr Hall. Then came a letter from Yudof, saying that he’d be remaining in Oakland to work on a publicity campaign for the Blue and Gold Opportunity Program for needy students.
The student body thinks otherwise. Though the occupation of the building was eventually ended by the police, some students are still facing charges, and the student body is being left with the clean-up tab. There’s a lot of pent up anger at the campus, and at least one student believes that Yudof’s decision was “heavily informed by the likely reception he would get here.” Or perhaps he thinks that there are no needy students at UCSC.
