CABRILLO WINTER DANCE CONCERT

Cabrillo presents a smorgasbord of contemporary choreography from guests, faculty and even some elite invited students. There’s some ballet, some jazz, some old school popping and locking, and even some “post-modern physical theater.” Whatever that is, it sounds intense. Guest performances by members of the Cal State East Bay Touring company and lots of genre- and back-bending moves that’ll make you wonder, as all good dancing should, how such a thing is even possible from a human body. https://www.santacruz.com/cabrillo-winter-dance-concert-e1742291

STARS and SUPERNOVA

Without the MAH, would anything cool happen in Santa Cruz? Not nearly as much, that’s for sure. So why not dish out a few hundred bucks to keep them in business? Stars is the MAH’s biggest fundraiser, and this year’s brand new format will send you straight into outer space with cocktails, dining and two kinds of auctions to support the Museum’s exhibits and educational programs. You can also pick up a ticket with a smaller price tag to dance (and still get in on those cocktails) at the Supernova after party with DJ Sparkle. https://www.santacruz.com/stars-and-supernova-e1762071

MOON DUO

A San Francisco-based band that embraces experimental, psychedelic, prog and fuzz-rock, Moon Duo has had several musical incarnations. Originally an avant garde outfit that drew inspiration from John Coltrane’s late-era free jazz aesthetic as well as the reverb-y hum of the Silver Apples, the guitar- and keyboard-driven band has also ventured into space rock, art rock and Velvet Underground-esque protopunk. Its latest release, Circles, was created, in large part, during an isolated winter in the Rocky Mountains. Inspired by a Ralph Waldo Emerson essay of the same name, the album explores the band’s lighter side while maintaining a sense of experimentalism and unpredictability.

DOWNTOWN HOLIDAY PARADE

Last year, there were Nutcracker ballerinas, old cars, a pack of (well-trained) dogs, and a lineup of a whole bunch of kids from the circus school juggling on stilts while riding unicycles. And that was only half the parade. https://www.santacruz.com/downtown-holiday-parade-and-lighted-boat-parade-e1708401
