“Boxing for Parkinson’s. Rock Steady Style!”

About “Boxing for Parkinson’s. Rock Steady Style!”

“Boxing for Parkinson’s. Rock Steady Style!” --Brian Dunniway, Rock Steady Boxing Director, Santa Cruz Boxing and MMA

Rock Steady Boxing Santa Cruz began last October in Aptos, with coach Crystal. When Crystal moved to Southern California, RSB Santa Cruz moved to Scotts Valley, where Coach Brian welcomed everyone, committing to the needs of the Parkinson’s Community, and becoming RSB certified. The Rock Steady Boxing contingent has grown and grown and more classes have been added to accommodate the group. Brian will present the background and basis for Rock Steady Boxing and why it’s good for People with Parkinson’s (PwP).
According to the Rock Steady Boxing website https://www.rocksteadyboxing.org, RSB “gives people with Parkinson’s disease hope by improving their quality of life through a non-contact boxing based fitness curriculum.”
Brian started training in martial arts and fitness when he was a teenager to build his self confidence. He has studied many forms of martial arts in his life, including: Karate, Choy Lee Fut, Jeet Kun Do, Ju Jitsu, Sanshou, Muay Thai, America Kickboxing and Western Style Boxing. Like his passion for martial arts, Brian has dedicated his life to understanding nutrition and fitness. From body-building and weight loss to athletic performance, through his studies and practice he has put into place the most cutting edge training protocols.Fut,

Brian's training philosophy is simple: Find something you love and it no longer is something you have to do, it becomes something you want to do.

HISTORY:
The Santa Cruz County Parkinson’s Group (SCCPG), a project of the not-for-profit EASE PD, Inc. (www.easepd.org), has been a long-standing community organization whose mission is to foster a supportive environment for People with Parkinson’s disease (PwP), their families, friends and caregivers. For more than 25 years, it has been providing a venue for them to meet, socialize, and learn, both from each other and from outside speakers. It also provides community outreach in the form of a newsletter called Movers and Shakers and via informational brochures placed in local physicians’ offices.

The group is committed to disseminating the latest scientific information about the disease and in supporting access to much-needed exercise and other therapeutic activities.

The vibrant Santa Cruz Parkinson’s community of those with PD, their family members, and volunteers continues to welcome new members, and hopes to increase its impact in Santa Cruz County. However, there are still areas of the community that are underserved. It is the hope that small-group discussions on topics of mutual interest at the March symposium will help to guide future projects and fundraising efforts, as well as attract new members.
