About Moth Ball!

How much do you know about moths? Who are these nighttime cousins of butterflies? Moths are very diverse group of insects, but they often escape the notice of us daytime-oriented humans.

To bring attention to the beauty, diversity, and ecological importance of moths, we’re celebrating National Moth Week with a Moth Ball at Quail Hollow!

During this nighttime event, we’ll hang lights in front of white sheets around the park to attract moths to land on our sheets, allowing us to observe, admire, and photograph them. Many other organisms are also attracted to these lights, and we’ll likely see spiders, scorpions (did you know that scorpions glow under UV light?), beetles, and a host of other critters. Park naturalist Christian Schwarz will be joined by Ken-ichi Ueda (iNaturalist) and Constance Taylor (from California Center for Natural History) who will be present to help run the event and talk about the biology of these creatures.

After a brief orientation with our naturalists, we’ll do a circuit to visit each of the sheets to see what creatures we’ve attracted. Please bring your own headlight or flashlight, and appropriate clothing and footwear.

RSVP is requested - please give us a call at (831) 335-9348
