Alfredo Rodriguez is yet another incredible pianist to come out of Cuba’s rich musical culture. Rigorously schooled in classical piano at Havana’s conservatories, Alfredo’s deep connection to the folkloric music of Cuba is evident in his incendiary performances. But it was his voracious appetite for American jazz and jazz piano that led Rodriguez to his current ascendancy on the international music circuit with appearances at the Playboy Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, Jazz in Marciac, Umbria Jazz and Jazz à Vienne. In 2006 he was discovered playing at the Montreux Jazz Festival by Quincy Jones, the iconic producer, who has worked with everyone from Billie Holiday to Michael Jackson. Quincy succinctly sums up Rodriguez’s talent, “Alfredo is very special and I do not say that easily because I have been surrounded by the best musicians in the world my entire life. He is without a doubt one of the best young pianists I’ve ever seen and with the enormous skills that he already possesses, his potential is limitless.” Jones co-produced Rodriguez’s latest album, Tocororo, a sonic tour de force which features the incredible vocals of classical Indian singer Ganavya Doraiswamy who will be performing on this tour.
