About Anat Cohen & Trio Brasileiro

Anat Cohen is a fresh shot of high energy for the often neglected clarinet. A standout performer, she has won the clarinet category in both the Jazz Journalist's and DownBeat jazz polls for several years in a row, and her onstage exuberance is as contagious as the music she plays. Once the preferred instrument of swing era legends Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw, the clarinet lost out to the brassy, harsher sounding saxophone as the reed instrument of choice in the modern jazz era. Fortunately, in recent years, with Brazilian choro (similar in its use of improvisation to jazz) and klezmer music receiving more attention from the public, a new generation of music lovers is being introduced to the subtle sound of the clarinet. Anat is leading the renaissance with excellent support from the members of Trio Brasileiro: Douglas Lora on guitar, Dudu Maia on mandolin (bandolim) and Alexandre Lora on percussion. Anat and Trio Brasileiro recently released Alegria Da Casa, a wonderful mix of choro classics and original compositions with a driving groove, or ginga as Brazilians call it.
