About ← Back to All Events, Evening Events, Free Events, Hands-On History, History Events Hands on History: An Immigration Story with Joaquín Barreto

Joaquín Barreto, author of El Otro Lado (The Other Side) An Immigration Story, will play some live music and invite you to share your immigration story and experience. Joaquin will speak about assimilation, discrimination, living in the US with a label of “illegal alien” and the consequences of that.

About the book and author: El Otro Lado is a very personal narrative on immigration, overcoming cultural shock and assimilating into the U.S. Through music and stories, the author takes you through various stages of transition, from country to country, from childhood to young adulthood and more. The descriptions of the rural Mexico are felt by the reader, the scenes, the scents, the traditions and culture that seem to evaporate as new traditions are adopted with the false assumption of becoming more American.
