About Contra dance - open band, open caller

Come to dance, play, or call at our annual open band, open mic contra dance!

Musicians and callers must contact us in advance at [email protected], and will get free admission to the dance. The band is open to all musicians who can play the tunes. All band members need to arrive shortly after 5:00 for a talk-through and sound check. Jim Oakden and Kevin Carr will be anchoring the band. Kelsey Hartman will lead the callers.

Dancers are welcome at any time. New dancers are encouraged to attend the free beginner's lesson at 5:40 p.m. Bring your dance shoes and a water bottle. Potluck snacks at the break. Wear comfortable clothes and low-heeled non-marking shoes (preferably that slide).

Contra dancing is a form of traditional American set dance, always to live music. Easy to learn dances are taught & prompted. All ages welcome. Come alone, with a partner, or with friends. Experienced dancers will often ask new folks to dance to help them learn the ropes. New dancers are encouraged to attend the free lesson at 5:40, before the regular dance at 6:00. The figures themselves are simple and easy to learn, and similar to those used in traditional square dances - for example, do-si-do and swing your partner. A night consists of multiple Contra dances, with each dance lasting 8-9 minutes and alternating between a partner and multiple "neighbors." Then you thank your partner and ask someone new to dance.
