About Delfeayo Marsalis Quartet: The Last Southern Gentlemen’s Tour

Trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis leads an adroit quartet made up of Sullivan Fortner on piano, Glen Fisher on bass and the great Marvin “Smitty” Smith on drums. Delfeayo’s latest recording, The Last Southern Gentlemen, marks the first time the intrepid trombonist/producer has collaborated on an album with his father, the famous New Orleans pianist Ellis Marsalis. Utilizing elements of classic jazz, blues, ballads, and modern themes, Delfeayo produces “jazz magic” with the backing of a skillful rhythm section. In his early professional days, Delfeayo apprenticed as a sideman with five legendary bandleaders: Art Blakey, Abdullah Ibrahim, Slide Hampton, Max Roach, and Elvin Jones. A prodigious record producer, Delfeayo has produced records for Harry Connick, Jr., Marcus Roberts, Nicholas Payton, and many other major artists. The Marsalis family name is practically synonymous with the word “jazz” and creative music. Sometimes described as the “first family of jazz,” the Marsalis’s – family patriarch Ellis and his sons, Branford, Wynton, Delfeayo, and Jason – have all made their mark on the jazz world. In 2011, they collectively received the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master award, a unique honor.
