Donny McCaslin's rise from a young saxophone phenomenon into a mature, world-class musician collaborating on David Bowie's Blackstar (Bowie's final recording) is no surprise to anyone who witnessed a teenaged McCaslin playing at the old Cooper House sidewalk cafe in downtown Santa Cruz in the early '80s. Beyond Now—Donny's latest recording—is both a tribute and heartfelt farewell to Bowie whose passing shocked the music world in 2016. Covering several re-workings of Bowie songs and his own compositions, McCaslin's otherworldly acoustic-electronic soundscapes brilliantly underscore a 21st Century vision for the shape of jazz to come.
