"Cybervisionary Doctorow, a multi-award-winning and New York Times best-selling author, returns to adult fiction after eight years with a story set in a futuristic dystopia. Life's necessities, such as food, clothing, and shelter, can be printed out via computer, but the world is despoiled by climate change. Hubert, Etc parties relentlessly and scorns people who bother to work, finally becoming a walkaway with heiress girlfriend Natalie. With other walkways, they discover something that will inspire war." —Library Journal
"Inspired by Rebecca Solnit’s A Paradise Built in Hell, Doctorow offers meticulous worldbuilding and philosophizing about how the world just around the corner might be. A truly visionary techno-thriller that not only depicts how we might live tomorrow, but asks why we don’t already." —Kirkus, starred review
Cory Doctorow is a science fiction author, activist, journalist and blogger—the co-editor of Boing Boing (boingboing.net) and the author of the bestselling LITTLE BROTHER, which was recently optioned by Paramount, with Don Murphy producing. He is the former European director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and co-founded the UK Open Rights Group. Born in Toronto, Canada, he now lives in Los Angeles.
The Collapsing Empire is the first novel of a new space-opera sequence set in an all-new universe by the Hugo Award-winning, New York Times-bestselling author of Redshirts and Old Man's War. Our universe is ruled by physics and faster than light travel is not possible—until the discovery of The Flow, an extra-dimensional field we can access at certain points in space-time that transport us to other worlds, around other stars. Humanity flows away from Earth, into space, and in time forgets our home world and creates a new empire, the Interdependency, whose ethos requires that no one human outpost can survive without the others. It’s a hedge against interstellar war—and a system of control for the rulers of the empire.
“John Scalzi is the most entertaining, accessible writer working in SF today.” –Joe Hill
"I am a cockroach. I aspire to be a cockroach. But in all honesty, what that means is that as a writer, you have to recognize that nothing lasts and things change..." - Interview with The Verge
"So here in 2017, when you have a book coming out called The Collapsing Empire, you get a lot of rueful smiles and knowing nods and statements like “so, writing non-fiction now, are we?” and “a little on the nose, isn’t it?” and you just have to sort of grin and nod..." - Tor.com
John Scalzi is one of the most popular and acclaimed SF authors to emerge in the last decade. His massively successful debut, Old Man's War, won him science fiction's John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer. His New York Times bestsellers include The Last Colony; Fuzzy Nation; Redshirts, which won 2013's Hugo Award for Best Novel; and Lock In. Material from his widely read blog, Whatever, has also earned him two other Hugo Awards. He lives in Ohio with his wife and daughter.
