About Omar Sosa Quarteto Afrocubano

Pianist/composer Omar Sosa has established an international reputation for his emotive, fiery brand of Afro-Cuban jazz. Steadfastly dedicated to the folkloric roots of Cuban music, Omar’s harmonic structures and earthy polyrhythms incorporate the best aspects of traditional and contemporary song forms to produce music that is at once innovative and accessible. The word “eclectic” is a perfect fit for Sosa. Afro-Caribbean rhythms, classical music, jazz, and hip-hop, all find a place at the table in Omar Sosa’s world of sound. In 2011, Sosa won The 10th Annual Independent Music Awards in the Jazz Album category for his recording, Ceremony. A seven-time Grammy nominee over the course of his dynamic career, Omar’s musical reach stretches from tightly composed melodic pieces to freewheeling expressions of collective improvisation. The membership of Sosa’s Quarteto Afro-Cubano – they performed on his last recording project, Ile – consists of fellow Cuban expatriate Leandro Saint-Hill on saxophone, flutes, and vocals, with Mozambique native Childo Tomas (who has been with Sosa for over ten years) on electric bass and vocals. Childo is also very accomplished on the African mbira. Ernesto Simpson is on drums and vocals, rounding-out this engaging, evocative band of troubadours.
