UCSC Jazz Ensembles

Two UCSC Jazz Ensembles will perform. Director of Jazz Studies professor Karlton Hester will showcase students from his improvisational theory class along with members of Hesterian Muscism. Dr. Hester specializes in premeditated, spontaneous and electro-acoustic compositions. The UCSC Big Band, under the direction of Charles Hamilton, is composed of students, as well as community enthusiasts. They perform big band music from swing, bebop, Latin, and modern jazz, drawn from a wide spectrum of the jazz canon – including works by both well-known and lesser-known composers – all arranged for the contemporary big band format.
