Cyanotype Workshop
About Cyanotype Workshop
Using the power of the sun, create one of a kind prints of California native plants. Cyanotype is a photographic printing process that produces a vibrant, blue print (which is how blueprints were made until the 1950s!) Since this process was first invented in 1842, it has been used to make prints of plants and algae, showing the light that passes through or is blocked by their leaves and other parts of the plant. At this workshop, local artist Marlene Mirassou will teach us that same process of making cyanotypes as we select plants and make prints ourselves!
This workshop will occur both indoors at the Museum as well as outside in our native plant garden. All materials will be provided. All ages welcome.
About the Artist: Marlene Mirassou was born and grew up in Santa Clara Valley in an agricultural family. A love of the outdoors, nature and photography came early and a desire to pursue nature photography preceded her decision to become a physician. After her career as a psychiatrist and faculty at U.C Davis School of Medicine, she has been able to give more time to these earlier interests. She currently studies photography and art at Cabrillo College. Previously, she had studied photography at San Jose State University and Milwaukee Center for Photography. She began working in the cyanotype process in 2013.
Marlene Mirassou's exhibit Light Through the Leaves will be on display at the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History July 7 - July 30, 2017.
July 8th | 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Pre-registration required.
Price: $20 Adult | $15 Children | $5 off for Museum Members
