About Cyanotypes of the Sea Workshop

Using the power of the sun, create one of a kind prints of local algae. Cyanotype is a photographic printing process that produces a vibrant, blue print when exposed to sunlight. The first cyanotype artist was Anna Atkins, a British photographer who published a book of British algae cyanotypes in 1843. In honor of this pioneering female artist and naturalist, we will learn that same process of making cyanotypes from algae, using samples collected along the coast of the Monterey Bay.

Located at the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History, this workshop will occur both indoors in the Museum’s downstairs workshop area as well as outside in our native plant garden. All materials will be provided. Algae specimens have been legally collected under the Museum’s Fish & Wildlife permit.
