About Sounds in the Sanctuary

On Friday March 3rd, the Sanctuary Exploration Center in Santa Cruz will host a free, family friendly art and science evening focusing on sounds in the Sanctuary. Marine animals rely on sound to acoustically sense their surroundings, communicate, locate food, and protect themselves underwater, yet animal sounds are not the only sounds in Monterey Bay. Sounds from humans, such as boats or even planes, can affect an animal's ability to survive. We invite the public to learn more about the sounds in Monterey Bay, enjoy a pop-up gallery from Bay Area artist Maggie Hurley, listen to real "sounds in the sea" from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), participate in hands-on art and science activities, and enjoy refreshments.
